Learn About Shetland

Visual Arts
This photograph by Ivan Hawick captures a Shetland seascape in a magical mood.
The light, landscape and seascapes of Shetland have long inspired local and visiting painters and photographers. In recent years, the output in every visual arts field has steadily grown and several artists have settled in the islands, supplementing the pool of ability already present.
There is a very active local artists’ group, Veer North, and there are several spaces offering display opportunities, including the Bonhoga Gallery in Weisdale, the Shetland Museum and the privately-owned Vaila Fine Arts in Lerwick. Several local cafés also stage exhibitions.
'Night Fishing' by Paul Bloomer, a Shetland artist who has recently exhibited at the Boundary Gallery, London.
A glance at the Veer North website will give some idea of the range and quality of work being produced.
If you are a practising artist, Shetland might be a new stimulus for your work, either through a short residency or a more permanent move. Either way, Shetland Arts would be happy to hear from you and offer further advice.
