Shopping

Shopping on Commercial Street.

There are local general stores in all the larger communities throughout the islands and, occasionally, you will also find more specialist stores in rural areas, for example a bookseller or an antique shop. However, most of Shetland’s shops are in Lerwick. Although we do have branches of a handful of national clothing, footwear, electrical, chemist and supermarket chains, most shops are locally owned. In most respects, choice is inevitably more limited than you’d expect in a city centre. On the other hand, our shops stock things that may be hard to track down on the standardised shelves of national retailers. For example, we have some shops specialising in local crafts, particularly textiles, which offer some really unusual designer items.

Prices may be a little higher for some items but, for most goods including food, they are not significantly different from what you’d pay elsewhere. Many Shetlanders, like people elsewhere, use the internet to do a proportion of their shopping.
