Move to Shetland

Case Study: Sathappan Saravanan

Sathappan Sarvanan is a marine scientist involved in the aquaculture industry. He is based at the NAFC Marine Centre in the village of Scalloway. He first visited Shetland in September 1998.

I moved to Shetland to study at the NAFC Marine Centre. At that time, I’d never been to Europe, nor did I have any contacts in the western world, so I was curious. At first, it was very strange.

Moving straight from Chennai (Madras) to Shetland inevitably involved a culture shock and it was difficult to adjust. However, everyone made me feel very welcome; people were so friendly! If it were not for my friends in Shetland, I would not have stayed all these years.

The advantages of living in Shetland include the strong sense of being part of the community. You always feel at home. It’s safe and you can enjoy the peace and fresh air at any time. Shetland people are kind and hospitable and are always willing to help you.

The downsides include the remoteness from the mainland, which results in high travelling costs and takes up time. The shops are limited in terms of choice. The weather can be bad in winter, but we’ve become used to it. The positive aspects of Shetland outweigh the negative ones.

I enjoy working in Shetland. In my work at the aquaculture section in NAFC Marine Centre plays an important part for the local fish farming industry. It has all the facilities and there is lots of potential.

Shetland is one of the friendliest places to be found in the whole of the UK. If someone wants to live and work somewhere that is peaceful, safe and friendly, Shetland is the place.
