Health and Social Care
The CT scanner at the Gilbert Bain Hospital.
Shetland has good health-care facilities including general practitioners, dentists, opticians and nurses and health visitors. The 52-bed Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick is well-equipped; they recently installed a state-of-the-art CT scanner, most of the cost of which was met by a well-supported public fundraising campaign. As an acute general hospital, the Gilbert Bain can undertake many routine operations as well as offering maternity, accident and emergency services. If more specialised treatment is required, patients are taken to the Scottish mainland, usually to Aberdeen.
Health services are provided by a Community Health Partnership, of which NHS Shetland is a part. To find out about health services in particular areas of Shetland and obtain contact details for registering with a doctor, you can click on this map. Information about dental services is available from NHS Shetland.
Other health care options include a range of alternative therapies offered
by various practitioners around Shetland.
